Can I become an ML/AI Engineer with a BS Mathematics and Data Science degree instead of Computer Science? [D]
I'm currently pursuing a BS Mathematics with Data Science at COMSATS University in Pakistan. My goal is to become an ML/AI Engineer, eventually specializing in Deep Learning and LLMs.
My degree includes Calculus, Linear Algebra, Statistics, Python, OOP, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science and other computer-related courses.
However, since my degree title isn't Computer Science, I'm concerned about how employers might view it.
I'd like to ask people working in the industry or studying in this field:
Is this degree a good academic foundation for becoming an ML/AI Engineer?
Can mathematics and data science graduates compete with CS graduates for ML engineering positions?
Are there any important CS fundamentals I should learn separately?
Would a Master's in AI or Computer Science be beneficial later?
I'd appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have transitioned into AI/ML from a Mathematics or Data Science background.
